To put this into perspective, a student that's received res placement will have to pay just over R10 000 for registration as well as res. So in essence, before lectures even start, these students need to have paid just over R20 000. Let that sink in...

so smart. let the protests die down and let them write the exams and then boom! hit them with the increase because they know the students won't protest during the festive season.

i specifically remember Mcebo saying something about how management will wait until everyone is drunk and happy at home during the festive and then announce the increment, no surprise here

This honestly seems as though management has no regard for what the students are fighting for. Sure, maybe not FREE education per say but at least no increment for starters. You can't possibly tell me that there aren't any areas for them to cut costs. This is honestly such a slap in the face and I just hope other varsities won't feel the need to do the same

What a time to be a varsity student in SA

They'd rather invest in additional intensive security instead? because that's exactly what they're going to need once the academic year commences. i fail to understand the logic behind this thinking

I fail to understand the logic of this movement...... Yes Wits had to increase fees, because in life prices go UP!!! Let me ask you all a question...... Do you not think the lectures deserve salary increases inline with inflation? Or should they sacrifice for the greater good ....... accept lower income in real terms for their hard earned labor because the mellenials feel their generation is deserving of hand outs!!

All i wish, is for all the Student Representative Councils to unite and formulate a formidable movement that will evade the tricks of time and secure a victory for everyone, Black, white Poor and Rich. 2017 is truly an opportune year to really shut down. #FEESMUSTFALL

You have to look at it not as a student, black or white person. this is a national crisis and if you truly care for this country you will rethink.

I disagree.

I think the students should rethink!!
1) They should rethink their approach - The marches turned violent, attracting thugs which discredited their message.
2) They should rethink who is to blame - Energy was wasted targeting the universities. Its the corrupt and inefficient politicians that are the root cause of their complaints.
3) They should rethink who their spokes persons are as it was blatantly obvious the main voices in this movement were self enriching fame seekers, keen to fabricate a struggle movement so they could feel connected to their heros.
4) They should rethink the consequences of their actions. Push too hard and you may get what you asked for - Free education that pushes all the lectures overseas or back into the private sector.

I get your reasoning and yes, the cost of living is increasing but it's more about figuring ways to cut costs and allocate available funds efficiently. For example, I recently found out that the maintenance of a very small patch of grass on our campus was over a million rand per year. Which raises the question of why not use that money for additional bursaries or something? I'm pretty sure we could survive without that patch of grass anyway

This is true, the university seems uninterested in channeling money into different directions and cost saving. They've gotten so used to milking students for everything we've got that they can't seem to get out of that mode. There is a fear that lecturers will leave because they aren't being paid, but I know lecturers from CLM who have left because they felt that the institution was no longer an academic one but rather a business. Student interests are not put first, all we see is the university looking to demolish residences for parking lots despite student opposition, we weren't even consulted about it! So for me, the university is very disingenuous when they say that they support the call for free education and yet they do nothing in support of that call. Their words don't ,arch their actions at all and that's distressing to students.

Anybody that believes in free education should not be accepted into a place of higher learning. If you can't understand a basic economic concept like that, then you are not university material.
