Why can't restaurants give food to the homeless?

I heard that the law was passed by Clinton that now allows restaurants to give away any uneaten food and this confirms that. Many restaurants are not aware of the new law and need to be educated of the new law.

They could give their leftover food to the homeless. At least they didn't waste food and at the same time, they got to feed and help someone.

Rather than the food gets spoiled, might as well give it to someone. Restaurants actually stop serving food after a certain number of hours as it is deemed 'unfresh' already. They could donate that to shelters.

Makes sense giving it to the needy than letting the food spoil. Maybe they can get a tax write off for donating.

Yes, that's what usually happens. But it wouldn't hurt if they give it to people who need it more.
