Why are we still clinging onto ancient tradition?

I think that it can be extremely harmful, as this video, which is shocking, is not an isolated incident. Young boys and girls are still being initiated, in monstrous and undignified ways in the name of tradition. We find ourselves in a world in which ignorance is not an excuse. We cannot say that:"Oh, we didn't know that it was bad or harmful.", because we do know. We know that having unprotected sex can spread HIV, so doing something like this cannot be justified whatsoever. As the human race, we now know more than our ancestors ever could, so why continue with the traditions and customs that they created, in a world that was far more different and primitive than the world that we live in today? These traditions are not relevant to our survival, or our society, so why fight for them to continue, when we have the knowledge to decide otherwise?

I think that tradition is important, and that we should preserve where we came from and what was important to those before us. I am saying this to the traditions that do not hurt anyone in the process. Or they should be changed slightly to suit the times.

Performing ancient traditions, that we know are harmful within a post modern society, simply for the sake of tradition, is dangerous to the individuals, as well as the growth of society as a whole. I believe that any tradition that is harmful, or creates stagnation within a community should be stopped.

We keep clinging to our ancient tradition simply because if we don't know where we came from, we won't know where we're going.

Clinging to ancient tradition prevents progress. Ancient traditions may not be logical for us in the modern day and we need to stop doing it. What is the point in all of it if it it isn't suited to our time now? It would be a waste of time and energy.

Some traditions don't make sense. We should stop doing them because it's illogical and impractical. It may have worked for the old ones before but we're in an age where everything needs an explanation.

Everyone is living the fast paced life. Some traditions don't fit the modern society now. If you ask the old people why they do it, some don't even know why. They just do it because of tradition. I would want to know why I'm doing it and if it's even real.

There is nothing wrong about preserving some ancient traditions for as long as it doesn't cause any serious problems at all.

I agree Len. This kind of tradition is not worth preserving at all. These people are not in the right frame if mind.

I love to see some tribe or group of people still practicing some old traditions. Some are fun and really do preserve our culture. But the one I just watched in this video is horrible.
