Fielder’s contract is worth $24 million this season and every year through 2020, and he’ll collect every dime even if he never sets foot on a baseball diamond again. It is what remains on the $214 million contract he signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent ahead of the 2012 season (he was traded to Texas after two seasons in Detroit). It is the beauty of MLB contracts, which are completely guaranteed for performance and injury as soon as a player puts pen to paper.

This is why I always tell my kids to play baseball. If you are going to condition constantly and ruin your body you might as well have guaranteed money. The way other sports treat players is borderline unlawful. They give you their heart and soul and when they get hurt you leave them out to dry.

I cried right along with him as he made his speech. The good news is he will never have to work again and can sit around and enjoy his money.

This is going to set Texas back for a while. Reminder Bobby Bonilla. The Mets are still paying him believe it or not.

But, according to multiple sources, Fielder will not be retiring. Instead, he will go on the 60-day disabled list. And, he can continue to stay on the 60-day DL, perhaps for the entire length of his contract depending on what his doctors declare his state of health to be. If he stays on the DL, he will continue to collect his guaranteed salary. But how that money is covered is a bit complex.

First, the Rangers will pick up $9 million per season, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News with Fielder’s former team the Detroit Tigers picking up an additional $6 million. Another $9 million will be covered each year by insurance taken out by the Rangers on Fielder.

Go buy an island and enjoy your retirement big homie. He ended up with just as many home runs as his father now that is something no one saw coming.
