Abraham Maslow has noted that every human need can be classified into one of the following 5 : Physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem and self-actualization

Without the base levels being met, it's almost impossible to reach the top level - which is why self actualization is something some people may struggle with

Fulfilling and meeting the different tiers is essentially what keeps people motivated - the desire to get to complete and satisfactory self-actualizaton

I generally like to think of these as growth stages - the basic needs that you as a baby require are at base level and the older you get, the more complex the tiers become

Everyone strives for something better. When you're younger the needs are simpler. As you get older, it gets more complicated and the needs are more psychological.

Getting older means having more needs. It's more of what makes you feel good about yourself than than the bottom tier which is about physical needs.

This states that people are motivated by certain needs. Without the D-needs at the bottom of the tier, people strive for the B-needs at the upper parts. They need to satisfy every level and they get motivated for more.

We rarely get to the top of the pyramid. It's probably why a lot of people get depressed.

I agree. We were more carefree when we are young.

The bottom tier is about personal needs. The upper part is more on validation for yourself and acceptance of others. Older people need to feel accepted and appreciated. It's more about the interaction with other people.
