I think that people do need to understand, or at least try to understand, gender reassignment and all that it entails. Once people understand, they are more likely to accept , or welcome the notion, without prejudice.

A friend of mine wants to undergo gender reassignment surgery, and she has been put on a 25 year waiting list in SA, and is now going to try and get it done in Vietnam. We don't consider the medical procedure, or what needs to be done psychologically, financially, spiritually, and so forth. It's a big procedure, that not everyone is able to afford.

I have nothing against any of these.

These surgeries seem so painful! Lately, a lot of the discussions around transgender has been about bathrooms and equality, which is still great and needs to be discussed, but this is a new facet of it that people need to be aware of.

I really am trying to be more open minded about this....but it just seems so unnatural...Going through such great lengths to deconstruct Gods work, and constructing it as your own just isn't right...I am not judging, or hating anyone that does do, or agree with it, I am just sharing my personal opinion.

25 years? That's crazy. Is this at a public or private hospital?

Well, God obviously got it wrong then, allocating the mind of a woman, into the body of a man in the first place.

Chances are, it would be a public hospital. The fees for this kind of surgery are through the roof, and no person in their 20's would be able to afford it without a donation, or loan of sorts.

Do you know if their are any charity, or donation groups that are dedicated to this kind of thing? I would love to help out if I can?

I'm not quite familiar with this but I've watched I am Cait and some of the people talked about it there. I t helped me understand what they go through.

They need to be psychologically ready to transition so I would think it takes a lot before they go through the surgery. It isn't as simple as getting a nose job. It is going to change their lives forever.

They're more open to talk about gender reassignment now. It's not as taboo as before. It would give people a better look at what happens and what they go through.

Sex reassignment surgery, also known as sex change or gender reassignment surgery is a procedure that changes genital organs from one gender to another. This procedure is done on newborns with genital deformities as well as on adults who “believe they are physically a different sex than they are mentally and emotionally.”

I've always been curious about this but I just know bits and pieces. I think being aware of such could be very important to understand the process, Transgenders are usually misunderstood.

The video was enlightening. Some people might think gender reassignment is just to get rid of your privates but it's about feeling good about yourself.

From what I understand, it's not about getting rid of their genitals but feeling what they are naturally as a person. It helps that they have the parts to make them feel that person.

I can imagine all the stress they have to go through because it will be a big change in their lives. They need to be ready physically, emotionally and mentally.

I came across this when I was watching Bruce Jenner's reality show I am Cait. There were transgenders who talked about what they go through. They talked about transitioning.

Transgenders shouldn't be treated differently just because they are not like us. They go through so much I can't imagine what it's like.

I'd seriously like to know more about transgenders. They seem to be so misunderstood by people. The comments can be really hurtful and knowing more about gender reassignment could help.
