I hope she can Integrate our nation’s mental and physical health care systems so that health care delivery focuses on the “whole person,” and significantly enhance community-based treatment.

And Clinton added: “We have to move away from treating the use of drugs as crime and instead move it to where it belongs as a health issue. And we need to divert more people from the criminal justice system into drug courts, into treatment and recovery.”

Clinton's proposal"largely ignores the most seriously mentally ill" who need hospital care. Closing of state psychiatric hospitals has led to a severe shortage of beds for people who need inpatient mental health care.

It seemed plausible, for example, that congressional Republicans and/or the RNC would complain that Clinton’s mental-health plan would cost too much. Maybe we’d hear the ol’ “throw money at the problem” canard or something similar.

It it a real problem. There are a number of mentally ill people walking the streets of Manhattan because a number of psychiatric hospitals closed.

She is going to do amazing things once she is in office. The mentally ill are such a disenfranchised group. Good for her for addressing this population.

She is mentally ill so she should know what it feels like. That being said we need to address the issue but we do not need one in the white house running the show. Have you seen her eyes? She definitely has crazy eyes syndrome. lmao

Americans with mental health conditions and their families need our support. The economic impact of mental illness is enormous –at nearly $200 billion per year nationwide in lost earnings[7] —and the human cost is worse. Too many Americans are being left to face mental health problems on their own, and too many individuals are dying prematurely from associated health conditions. We must do better. To date in this campaign, Hillary set out policies that will direct support to individuals with mental health problems and their families—including a detailed agenda to support military service members and veterans, an initiative to end America’s epidemic of drug and alcohol addiction, and a robust caregivers’ agenda. Today, she is building on those proposals with a comprehensive agenda on mental health. Hillary’s plan will:

In announcing the plan, Clinton said she would hold a White House conference on mental health during her first year in office if she is elected."The next generation must grow up knowing that mental health is a key component of overall health and there is no shame, stigma or barriers to seeking out care," Clinton said in her proposal.

There will always be holes in any proposal. I think she has done a great job at attacking the issue head on. I am sure once the attention to detail is devoted to this problem they will make sure state hospitals are in demand all the time.

Clinton has been asked about substance abuse by voters. Pamela Livengood of Keene, N.H. -- who has guardianship of her 5-year-old grandson because her daughter, who is struggling with addiction, can't care for him -- asked Clinton about substance abuse.

At least she is bringing the subject to the race and that will raise awareness.

As a down-payment on this agenda, Hillary will convene a White House Conference on Mental Health during her first year as President. Her goal is that within her time in office, Americans will no longer separate mental health from physical health when it comes to access to care or quality of treatment. The next generation must grow up knowing that mental health is a key component of overall health and there is no shame, stigma, or barriers to seeking out care.
