Fifteen doctors have written a short e-book on New York City’s “Zika Virus Surveillance and Preparedness” as part of this week’s “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pamphlet shows that the city is taking both medical and chemical measures to ensure that Zika will not become an epidemic in New York during the summer months.

I think right now the risk of Zika is very low and the effects of the pesticides will cause more cancer in the future. Are we willing to kill thousands with cancer just to save a few people from getting a fever, I think not. We should educate couples who are trying to have kids and keep them safe and for the rest they will be fine.

Florida will conduct an aerial insecticide spraying campaign at dawn on Wednesday in an effort to kill mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus, officials in Miami-Dade County said. The campaign will cover a 10-mile area that includes the one-mile-square area just north of downtown Miami that health officials have identified as the hub of Zika transmission in the state, the officials said on Tuesday.

Many states already have vector control programs. With the exception of states who have responded to past outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya, most state plans focus on control of mosquitoes for the prevention of West Nile virus (WNV). The biology and behavior of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are different from the mosquitoes that transmit WNV. Therefore, the tools used for surveillance of these species as well as strategies for control will be different from WNV mosquitoes.

There was a aerial spray done in my area last week beginning at 10 pm. It was reccommended that people stay indoors. I have children with respiratory issues so I was especially worried. I turned off a window fan I had because it did not have a filter. I'm not sure the strength of the pesticide being used but I wanted to stay on the sfe side.

Zika virus is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito and has been linked to cases of microcephaly, in which babies are born with underdeveloped brains. The virus has been detected in several Latin American countries, including Brazil where the outbreak was first observed and linked to increased cases of microcephaly. According to Dr. Martins, the explosion of mosquitoes in urban areas, which is driving the Zika crisis, is caused by a lack of natural diversity that would otherwise keep mosquito populations under control, and the proliferation of waste and lack of disposal in some areas which provide artificial habitat for breeding mosquitoes.

I can not find safety information regarding the spray. All I've found is that its recommended people stay indoors. There is nothing specific on the side effects of the pesticides.

Despite the fact that Congress has yet to pass a fully-funded Zika emergency bill, the House of Representatives passed the Zika Vector Control Act Tuesday evening, a bill ostensibly aimed at helping to fight the potential spread of the Zika virus throughout the United States.
But House Democrats and environmental organizations are crying foul, arguing that the bill uses the threat of Zika as a cover for rolling back crucial EPA regulations that protect bodies of water from pesticides.

Have we learned nothing from the past. We cannot control nature by spraying in open areas. We are only spraying our selves and more than likely creating another strand of animals that will kill us faster.
