The people of north Queensland are fortunate to have strong representation through the crossbenchers in this Parliament, but what worries me is we could go back to one of the big Brisbane-based parties running this Parliament and we know when that happens the voice of the north is not heard down here.

More than 6,500 people responded to a Lateline poll on Facebook that asked whether north Queensland should become a separate state.
Fifty-two per cent said no, but many respondents commented that state governments should be done away with all together.

There is, simply put, a trade-off between the economic benefits of large size and the democratic benefits of small size. That trade-off helps us understand why the Queensland government - any Queensland government - will fight a split. More economic power means more wealth that can be delivered to the government's supporters, and the political class rarely welcomes any more democratic participation.
