I think everyone is excited to see Kiefer back on TV. It has been a long time and I am sure he will do a great job on this show.

Mr. Sutherland had a good run with 24, going from 2001-2010 for the regular series and returning for a special event run in 2014, but he says he had really hoped his days of working a regular gig were over.

I love Kiefer Sutherland. I loved him in 24. I didn't know he had a new show. I am excited to see it.

If this comes anything close to 24 it will be the biggest hit of the year. He is so talented and so cute. Can't wait to see him in his new role.

In Designated Survivor, a lower level United States Cabinet member (Sutherland) is suddenly appointed President after a catastrophic attack during the State of the Union kills everyone above him in the Presidential line of succession. This is a family drama wrapped around a conspiracy thriller about an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation.

What Designated Survivor does so well is get that out of the way in the first act so it can show viewers that it's actually about so much more. And with Kiefer Sutherland at the center of it, Designated Survivor is a likely bet to be the best new network drama of the fall season.

Mr. Sutherland now requires his own detail. On “Designated Survivor” he plays a low-ranking cabinet member who ascends to the Oval Office when Congress is wiped out by an attack during a State of the Union address. The actor leaves behind the action-hero antics of the counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer to play a policy wonk thrust into a job he never wanted.

The show will not only tackle the mystery of who masterminded the terrorist plot, but track the journey of a man who goes from being an everyday citizen to the leader of the free world.

"When you've taken away the Congress and the Senate and you have to actually put that government back together," there's an opportunity to get things done, Sutherland said during the Television Critics Association's summer meetings, which wrapped up Thursday.

The show, which boasts a star-studded ensemble, promises to chart the ascension of an “everyman, this Mr. Smith,” as executive producer Mark Gordon puts it, as he stumbles over his new duties as leader of the free world.
