The idea of “building a harmonious society” has a history, one thread of which is very recent and the other thousands of years old. A weaving together of the strands places current ccp propaganda and prc political discourse in a larger pattern of thought. Moving between ancient and contemporary meanings, as well as philosophical and political usages, may offer a better understanding of why so many people in China are talking about “harmony.” Studying the epiphenomenon of “harmonious society” rhetoric raises important questions about China’s current vector in the broad sweep of its remarkable history, marked by revolutionary rupture and continuity with the past.

“The story of the past eight years is not mainly the pivot or the rebalance; it is the very substantial increases in Chinese capacities since 2008,” said Jeffrey A. Bader, who helped formulate Mr. Obama’s Asia strategy as his chief China adviser in the first term.

I'm not surprised, most everything Obama does is insufficient.

This was just for show trust me on this one. Look at the facial expression Obama's face, he looks defeated. The south China Sea is heating up faster than anything in recent history. There will be a conflict soon and one of these countries will have to back down. Neither of them have a history of doing so.

At a ceremony in this picturesque lakefront city, the two leaders hailed the adoption of the Paris agreement as critical to bringing it into force worldwide. Though widely expected as the next step in the legal process, the move could provide a boost to those who want to build momentum for further climate talks by bringing the December accord into effect as soon as possible.

So how can the two sides show respect to each other without compromising their core interests? And how can they accommodate each other without appeasing? Start with what some on each side, suspicious of the other, really think.

With East Asia transitioning into new geopolitical circumstances, there are two basic ways in which outcomes closer to the worst case end of the spectrum might come about: the United States could try to make too little space or China could ask for/expect too much.

At this point China is making all the bold moves while Obama sits around and does nothing. By the time we decide to try and act it will be too late. Most of the worlds trade goes through the south China Sea so this is very important.

There will never be peace between these two countries. You have one trying to hold on to the title of number one economy and one country on the edge of taking that crown away. They will never see eye to eye.
