Ms Savino writes that vegan diets leave children potentially lacking in iron, zinc and B12, which can lead to neurological problems and anaemia, reports Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
The MP explains that the aim of the 'Savino Law' is to"definitely stigmatise negligent parental behaviours which put minors at risk."

I do understand that some people may feel one way or another about dieting this is strictly up to the parents. There are so many eating habits out there that are worse for kids than Vegan. Are they going after the parents making their kids into fat slobs that have all kinds of health conditions?

As long as your kids are eating no one should be able to tell you what to feed them. If I am vegan and it is good for me then it is good enough for my kids. Being Vegan does not mean lacking vitamins that is just dumb to think.

Britain’s National Health Service recommends vegan and vegetarian children get two or three extra portions of vegetable proteins or nuts every day to make sure they’re getting enough protein and iron.
The proposed law comes after multiple Italian infants were hospitalized for undernourishment after reportedly being fed vegan diets.

Now we're seeing the repercussions of that case. Legislation recently proposed by Elvira Savino of the Forza Italia party, would put parents in jail for four years if they provide an “inadequate” diet for their children.

In Italy, five children have been hospitalized within the last 18 months because of their vegan diets. Last year, an Italian court ordered a vegetarian mother to cook meat for her 11-month-old baby after the woman's ex-husband complained about the child's diet.

As a vegan I can actually understand the government's concern. The protein and vitamins that are lost in a vegan diet has to be supplemented. It's an important factor a lot of unhealthy vegans forget about. Growing children need essential vitamins to grow. I don't agree with an all out ban but I think parents should be educated to help their children maintain healthy diets.

In the preamble to Savino’s bill (in Italian), she states that its aim is to ”stigmatise the reckless and dangerous eating behaviour imposed by parents” who pursue a vegan diet for their children.
