Home is where the heart is. But nobody said the home had to be your own. Airbnb features a dizzying selection of properties that are available to rent - over 350,000 in 190 countries. It started as a cheap way for young travellers to rent a sofa or a spare room during their travels. But today you can rent entire properties - whether it’s a spare holiday home, a local family’s second home or a property mogul’s latest purchase. There are some seriously swish places up for grabs.

I travel often and Airbnb has not only saved me money but allowed to stay in some really nice homes. I like to have access to a yard and balcony and you are not going to get that at a hotel.

Choosing your hotel is one of the most exciting things about booking a holiday. But what if instead of a simple bedroom with a cramped en-suite, you had your run of a beautiful poolside villa or seafront apartment? By connecting you to property owners across the world, Airbnb’s website makes it possible to find incredible pads at a fraction of the cost of top hotels.

I have used this twice and found it to be a great way to travel. I don't really care for hotels so this was a welcomed experience.

I had a bad experience at one place. I should have read the reviews so it was my own fault.

When my reservation requests started to trail off, I got onto Airbnb to find dozens more hosts had popped up nearby, undercutting my nightly rate.

That is part of the business. Hotels go through the exact same thing. You must hype up your place as a better choice even at a higher price. Offer laundry and other things someone else would not want to do for the guests. Meals anything.

I have had much success with Airbnb and will continue to use them. I have stayed at places in the States and abroad as well. :) GREAT IDEA!

You should really be careful who you choose. I have walked into some horrible situations with Airbnb and had to leave at least two apartments. Remember anyone can do this.

Settled on your perfect pad? Congratulations! It’s time to book. And it’s as easy as clicking a button. The property owner will then get a notification and decide whether they would like to accept your request. If they do, your card will be charged and your booking will be reserved. Pour yourself a glass of wine and start planning your holiday outfits.

If you think Airbnb is all cramped city apartments and sofa-surfing you’re wrong, because it turns out even the owners of really fancy pads can’t resist raking in a bit of extra cash by renting their places out.

They are trying to make this illegal in NY. That would be ashame because that is where I use it the most. Who wants to pay overpriced hotel fees in new york city?
