I find it compelling that belief and obedience are so closely linked in these two chapters. Or rather, unbelief and disobedience. Makes sense considering our God is able to"judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart".
The last verse of ch. 4 made me wonder... When it says,"let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need"... Is the" time of need" a reference to the times when WE are tempted and weak (thinking of the previous verse)? Is the"grace" specifically grace to overcome temptation...?

Not 100% sure if I'm seeing the link that you're seeing between God's word judging us at the deepest level and the preceding sentiment you expressed. Care to elaborate?

In terms of your question, I guess I see 4:16 as encouraging us to draw near to God on the basis of the perfect priesthood and compassion of Christ (through prayer etc) for it is through His priesthood (and sacrifice) that we will in fact endure in faithful obedience (cf 3:6 & 14).

I typed a much more detailed response (twice actually) but for some reason seem to be having issues posting from home... Will try to reconstruct the answer from the office tomorrow.

Okay, I wasn't successful at reconstructing my prior thought today. I will try to have a profound thought tomorrow, as it's now 11 p.m. and I'm getting profoundly tired!

Thanks for your replies. Too bad you kept losing your content though! Frustrating.
To explain my train of thought better, I was thinking on how true belief is revealed through obedience. Likewise The"thoughts and intentions of our heart" are revealed to God, and apparently He uses His Word to do so. So really my train of thought wasn't as clear as I thought it was (he he), but ultimately, the observation is that we're revealed for what we truly are. Both by our actions and by the Word. Our actions lay us bare before God, as does the Word.
