Designer babies refer to children whose genetics have been artificially selected or manipulated at the embryonic stage to exclude or produce certain traits. Designer baby technology or reproductive genetics combines genetic screening and engineering processes with in vitro fertilization (IVF).

This almost sounds like playing God and is way to close to the line for my comfort. Birth should be a protected occurrence that should not be tampered with.

Creating babies with three genetic parents may be the next step in preventing disease before a child is born. It may also be the next step in the long debate over how much control is too much in designing your child.

Have we not seen enough end of the world movies to know manipulating with human genetics can lead to a all but certain doom????

Lisa, people will try to control what eye color or hair color their child will have. Things that should be left up to nature.

Some doctors have denounced the practice; others question whether it’s true. Blogs are abuzz with the news, with armchair critics saying the phenomenon, if real, is taking the concept of designer babies way too far.

If deaf parents purposely use new genetic technologies to
give their child the genes for deafness, have the parents
harmed the child?

Consider a world where we control genetics and know exactly which segments of DNA code for certain traits. Imagine the opportunity to eradicate all genetic disease with a few simple alterations. Envision a society in which prospective parents can flip through a catalog and shop for traits to “design” their children. This imagined world may soon become possible through the rapid development of genetic engineering.

Wow - that is deep. In my opinion yes, they have also deprived that child and held that child back from many glorious sounds. For example if that child grows up and has a child of their own, they will never hear the laughter of their own child.

I just don't understand why you would want to deprive your child of one of God's gifts on purpose. Just does not make any sense to me.

It is still surprising to many people without disabilities when a person who has a disability becomes a parent. However, more people with disabilities are now considering and pursuing parenthood. As part of her decision making of whether to become pregnant, a woman with a disability may want information on if pregnancy will have a deleterious effect on her. Unfortunately, she may have difficulty finding any information on the subject. There are a number of reasons that finding this type of information is difficult.

Moreover, the concern over genetic interventions in favor
of disability is largely misplaced. Disabled parents who want
disabled children are few in number and diverse in purpose.
The recent focus on these parents in the debate over genetic
intervention improperly assumes that such parents are
incapable of making good choices and that the physical traits
they prefer are inherently damning.
