If they are not doing this anymore because they are concern for the well being of the elephants, then this is great news!! hope they continue

The declaration comes over a year after China's President Xi Jinping and United States President Barack Obama promised to authorize"almost entire band" on the import and fare of ivory, an assertion Wildlife Watch columnist Rachael Bale depicted as"a huge stride yet in endeavors to close down an industry that has energized the unlawful chasing of elephants.

This is some of the best news regarding ivory in years. But of course, it has to be faithfully implemented. And other nations need to follow the U.S and China in finally putting a stop to the ivory market.

A total ban on ivory would be disastrous for elephants. Better to legalise it. Allowing African farmers to profit from ivory in a carefully controlled market would give them an incentive to conserve wildlife. The best way to preserve these glorious animals is not to give their custodians a vested interest in poaching.

This should have been banned 200 years ago , fucking humans.

This should not be an issue anymore. It should have never started. I am disappointed China that it has taken you this long.

Why wait until 2017 ends China? Do it now. This is definitely a no-brainer!

It is a welcome step only if China has done it with a honest intent and the Chinese government must ensure that the ban really works. Next logical step for China would be to a complete ban on trading of Tiger parts. In times of Viagra, Chinese killing Tigers for using their body parts as aphrodisiac is preposterous .

Isn't this worse? Now it's in the black market with an increased value. This more people will start killing elephants due to the increased profit margin.

i never understood why people want elephant ivory so much. deer antler is kinda similar, and they shed, so no need to kill innocent animals for jewelry.

I think for this business I know quite better than all others. The video of the Chinese part was more than 20 years, can see from the police suites. And the producing video that's not ivory, that's mammoth, there is no killing of any animals. Canada is the biggest provider of Mammoth. Ivory was always forbidden in China, can't bring into this country, not allowed to sell and to produce anything from it. Nothing new. Stop please to attract peoples attention in the way of blaming a country. Focus please on Africa

In theory. If trading ivory is illegal with every country that china has dealings with, then china will have no choice but to stop trading themselves. They won't have a market for it.

While I agree with this, why torch all of the remaining ivory? That would ensure that elephants killed only for their tusks have now died for no reason at all. Existing ivory should be documented. Any buying or selling should have those papers, and if they are not to be found, the ivory is confiscated. They could offer to document ivory up to a certain point and then everthing that is not documented will be destroyed.

I'd like to believe that this the answer/the end,but I feel that this is just going to further the so called value, making it even more clandestine, secretive & criminal by the perverse, megalomaniacal elements in our world

I hate human beings....elephants are such innocent and intelligent creatures. Why must we kill such beautiful things?!? If we were made by God some of us have had to be made by the devil too.
