The journey to Twickenham is a unique experience, endowing every player, coach and supporter with many precious memories and a spectacle steeped in tradition, pride and a culture of excellence. Despite the sometimes inclement conditions, The Varsity Match was traditionally played at 2.00pm on the second Tuesday in December. However since 2007 it was played on a Thursday, continuing to attract large crowds.

The histories of both The Varsity Match and of rugby union are intertwined. Oxbridge rugby has been historically, and remains, at the forefront of the development and refinement of the game. Whilst Oxford and Cambridge are not professional teams, they remain a benchmark for the game through their promotion of the rugby’s traditional values and ideals. As the pinnacle of amateur sport, The Varsity Match is a unique and unmissable sporting event.

Light blue. Without a doubt. Rugby revitalized my passion for competition, and it gave me something to work for as I saw a future for myself in the sport

Last year's game was a splendid match played with 100% effort from both sides and a worthy winner in Cambridge. But it showed up the massive changes since I started watching the Varsity Match in the 1970s.

Back then the game was fully amateur so one didn't see a number of professional players on the pitch. The postgraduate population of all UK universities was also much smaller and the Varsity teams were still largely comprised of young undergraduates, many of them teenagers.

Despite Oxford not winning last year, my friends and I would never miss our annual trip to Twickers to cheer the team on. Fantastic atmosphere and always a passionate game!

The 136th men's fixture saw the Light Blues resist a late Oxford fightback to retain the crown with a 20-10 win. Cambridge led 13-3 through tries from Chris Bell and Archie Russell before Will Wilson reduced the deficit, but Charlie Amesbury sealed victory. In the earlier women's match, Cambridge ran in two tries in each half for a convincing 24-0 win.

I’m an Oxford old boy, and although I didn’t play rugby I will always be loyal to the dark blues. Those were the best years of my life.
