I am surprised this does not happen more often. Humans were made for land and sharks were made for water.

So the government is to blame here, they spend money killing sharks but not preventing the shark bites.

Do you think sharks put up warning signs about humans when we kill thousands of them every day? Newsflash: Dangerous things live in the ocean.

This is ridiculous. It's like breaking into someone else's house and complaining that they hit you too hard with a baseball bat.

I don't want to get attacked by a shark. Turns out you can avoid that by not going into known shark infested waters. Additionally, the ocean is not for us. It's for them.

Maybe the ocean needs a disclaimer nowadays . Of course it's very sad people have been killed , but people approach things like the jungle , the outback , the Savannah and mountains with caution- accepting any risks that come with it including the dangerous wildlife . Yet the ocean seems to be approached differently ? If we invade their space, things like this are bound to happen unfortunately . It's within our control to avoid places that are known to have shark sightings. If you are willing to take the risk you must be willing to accept the consequences , as tragic as they may be.

They want to put shark nets along the coast to prevent surfers getting bitten. funnily enough, the victim was previously against introducing the nets.

I think he was right to not want the nets because they will hurt the sharks. Just because he got bit does not mean he will change his mind. He had a bad day but you always take a chance entering the ocean.

The shark struck from behind and bit across the board’s fins as the boy lay on the board paddling. The shark’s lower jaw tore into the fiberglass as its upper teeth clamped his right hip and thigh, Wright said.

Shark attacks are random events – no shark knows when a human will enter the water so they can time an attack! There are many instances where sharks are in the same area as a human and they do not interact with them. Although random shark attacks can cluster (occurring in a particular area or over a time period) and may seem to many as an increasingly common event over time it is shown that the number of incidents at a location or time of the year vary from year to year and should be analysed over decades for trends.

Dr McPhee studied the number of bites at six global hot spots including the United States, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Reunion Island and Bahamas over the past 32 years. He found, between 1982 and 2013, there were 548 bites recorded in the United States, mostly in Florida, while Australia reported 199 bites and South Africa had 146 incidents.

Incidents classified as ‘provoked’ are not included in these web pages. A provoked incident relates to circumstances where the person attracts or intiates physical contact with a shark (accidently or on pursose) or was involved in fishing for, spearing, stabbing, feeding, netting or handling a shark, or where the shark was attracted to the victim by commercial diving activities (eg actively collecting abalone, pearls, other marine animals, etc) or by activities such as fishing, spear-fishing and cleaning of captured fish.

Great white, tiger and bull sharks account for most of the attacks. Dr McPhee said white sharks are protected and their numbers appear to be increasing.

They have already warned everyone, what else must they do to keep people out of the water. I say shut the beach down until the activity dies down. People are not going to listen.
