The effects of exposure to highly charged and ionized particles during extended deep-space travel could be long-lasting and without resolve, similar to dementia.

Does this mean that if we start a new civilisation on Mars that everyone will have the mental capacity of an octogenarian in a rest home?

What is the motivation to find out if Mars is habitable all of a sudden? While I am curious about other planets perhaps there should be a focus on preserving earth's natural resources.

I think space exploration teaches science more about the history of our own planet. It will be interesting to see if NASA can reach Mars in the next 14 years.

The project is one of 11 NASA grants awarded to 10 institutions sharing in about $5.7 million in funding to investigate astronaut health and performance on future space missions over the next two or three years. The studies will add to what officials already know about the mental and physical health of astronauts.

NASA in recent years has funded companies like Orbital Sciences and SpaceX to resupply the space station, with the aim of eventually launching manned missions once again from U.S. soil. In the meantime, U.S. astronauts have hitched rides into orbit with Russian missions when needed.
