These are the ominous words in a letter sent to the UN in recent days by 116 robotics experts, including Elon Musk and the head of Google’s DeepMind. They were warning about the dangers of “lethal autonomous weapons” — technology which is designed to kill without human supervision, most likely using artificial intelligence (AI).

In your opinion, are killer robots an imminent threat or are people making a big deal out of nothing?

Just remember the military keeps most things quiet. The sr71 blackbird was classified until it was retired.

People forget an arms race is not one sided. If someone makes a weapon, someone makes a defense against that weapon.

A small EMP could knock them out and it's not hard. Just get the magnets out of a microwave, get the copper coils out, hook them up to a car battery with a resistor and just plug and throw. Instant small scale power outage. Chances are it would also set off all their small charges too.

This is impressive. But what if they get in the wrong hands, what if they get hacked and what if they get used against all of us by someone who is not the government? Will it still be impressive and awesome?

It is real. Wherever there is a prototype of something it means that the idea is there and it has begun to taken shape if it hasn't already even if it failed, someome is perfecting it. These ideas sell for millions.

The"future" capabilities of the drones are certainly possible. And a programmed swarm is also possible even now. But as far as stopping these developments, it's too late as that boat sailed about 5 years ago.

So exactly how will we stop this? They didn’t stop atomic weapons, they just upped the ante till mutually assured destruction was inevitable. Same with this technology, we are basically screwed when they do this.
